們講華語的時候，「借」只有一個字，但是在英文，「借」字是被分成兩種︰Borrow 和 Lend。當我們用本地不準確的英語，我們會聽到 I will borrow you Ten Ringgit。（我借你十零吉），這個句子在英文是錯誤的。正確的句子是 I will lend you Ten Ringgit。
那我們怎能知道什么時候用 lend，什么時候用 borrow 呢？
Lend 的意思是「借給……」︰
例(1)I will lend you the note book.
（我會借那本筆記簿給你。）
(2)Can you lend me the note book.
（你可以借那本筆記簿給我嗎？）
各位讀者，你會注意到凡是英文用 lend 字，翻譯的中文句子便有「借……給」的字出現。
Borrow的意思是「向……借」︰
例(3)I would like to borrow your note book.
（我要向你借筆記簿）。
(4)Can Susan borrow your car？
（Susan可以向你借車嗎？）
現在讓我們閱讀以下這則會話︰
A︰This is a nice pen.Can I borrow it for a few days？（這是一枝很好看的筆，我可以向你借幾天嗎？）
B︰No,I can not lend you anything anymore.（不，我不可以借你任何一樣東西）。
A︰Why？（為什么？）
B︰Because you do not return anything to me.（因為你不還東西給我。）
A︰That's not true.Last month,I borrowed your story book.
Then,returned it to you last week.（那不對。上個月，我向你借一本書，然后在上個星期還給你。）
B︰When did I lend you a book last month？（我上個月幾時借一本書給你？）
A︰Don't you remember？The title of the book was《How to improve your English》。（你不記得嗎？那本書的書名是《怎樣搞好英語》。）
B︰Oh,yes.I remember it. You borrowed that book from me while I was on the way to Malacca.（是的，當我正要去馬六甲的時候，你向我借那本書。）
A︰That's right！（對了！）
B︰But,I don't have it.（但我現在沒有。）
A︰Why？（為什么？）
B︰You did not return it to me,You lent it to Michael.（你沒有給回我，你把那本書借給 Michael。）
